City of Villains

A year or so ago now, on the rebound from World of Warcraft, I played City of Heroes for a while. It was a lot of fun at first, and the character creation system is amazing (you rarely see two characters alike), but after a while it just became the same, repetitive grind and I found myself getting bored. So I reluctantly put aside “The Furious Kitty” and “Mesmerine” and returned to the hunt for the new, ultra-addictive MMO.

A few weeks ago my partner and a friend of ours started playing City of Villains, which is essentially City of Heroes but slightly revamped and this time you get to play the bad guys, and they’re having a lot of fun with it. Naturally, watching them play has been making me pine for online games too, so when I discovered MMORPG.COM was offering a free trial of City of Villains, I decided to give the game another chance.

My first attempt was with a pretty cool looking character called “Her Royal Evilness” but I discovered that the Stalker class just wasn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. I tried a couple of other classes, Corruptor and Brute, but just wasn’t enjoying it. After watching the boys play again I noticed that the Mastermind class (which gives you minions! woot!) looked like fun, so that was my next try. And I have to say that yes, it really is a hell of a lot of fun :)

So I’d like to introduce Shaylin, a Mastermind with a Magic origin.

Of course, I just can’t seem to make a character that doesn’t have a story. Shaylin’s background is pretty short and sweet but it’s there nonetheless. She was summoned from some hell dimension or another, which naturally made her pretty cranky, leading to the unfortunate demise of the summoner (mmmm, tasty!). Of course, since she was summoned here she can’t exactly get back to her nice, toasty warm hell dimension, so she’s on the loose on Mercy Island and looking for trouble (demons being demons and all) along with… her ninjas! Okay, I’m not sure how the ninjas fit in exactly except that she summons them so the magic thing kind of works there, and well… they’re ninjas and everybody knows ninjas are cool! hehe

It’s been quite a bit more fun this time around and levelling is a lot easier. Shaylin is already level 8 and my main character in City of Heroes never made it past 10 despite some pretty heavy playtime. I’m not sure if I’m going to keep going after my trial expires since I’ve got so much to do with my Legacy family in Sims 2 (not to mention that the Pets expansion is coming out soon. <Insert another woot! here>), but you never know. It’s a nice, mindless, beat-up-things game and sometimes a girl just needs one of those type of games. If it keeps being this fun it might be just the thing to tide me over until Vanguard comes out.
